Diego Cervero is a Latic
Way back in 2006 a Spanish striker called Diego Cervero had a trial at Oldham Athletic. He played in a couple of friendly games. Sadly the move never happened, but he still became a cult hero with a few latics fans partly due to his sideburns.
here the Manchester Evening news story back in 2006

Recently I heard about a Spanish club called Real Oviedo in financial problems who needed help. They were offering shares in the club to generate money, so I decided to buy shares to help them out. Then I thought, is Diego still there?. Sure enough he was.
The club was saved with help from Sid Lowe, shareholders, fans & ex players like Michu, Cazorla and Mata.
Then through social media I I was able to make friends with fellow shareholders & fans, who made me feel welcome being part of the club, especially the Real Oviedo Shareholders Trust.
Through that I discovered Diego wanted an Oldham shirt, so I was glad to help and sent a shirt with his name & number on plus my Oldham flag too.
This weekend he was given both the flag & shirt. Good to see him with an Oldham shirt at last but happy to see him in the Real Oviedo shirt scoring the goals for promotion this season!

90 Seconds of Joy
The scoreboard read LIVERPOOL 0 OLDHAM 1 for all of 90 seconds but for many, if not all of the 6,000 fans will never forget it. The premiership days are a distant memory now. Back in the early 90's we were being teams like Liverpool for fun, sadly times have changed.
The Friday night in Liverpool thankfully pulled the town the supporters and the club together.
Traveling down the motor-way seeing the Latics coaches in convoy leaving Oldham heading towards Merseyside was a good feeling. Walking up through Stanley Park just hoping we wouldn't let our selfs down and thankfully we didn't. It was a party atmosphere even before the game had begun. Even had Luis Suarez walk past me inside the ground.
As soon as we walked up the steps and saw the pitch that was it, camera time! As the teams came out, blue balloons & confetti filled the air, magical.
Even 5-1 down we were loving every minute of it. Also the fact we outplayed Liverpool for the 1st 25 minutes and took the lead with a truly amazing goal and should of been 2 nil up before that. As Simpson hit it, it was then a second or so to realise, holly shit we've just scored! As Simpson ran the length of the pitch towards the Oldham fans, grown men were hugging each other, dancing, jumping and even people crying. Even a blue flare was set off only a few yards from me. We didn't even have chance to settle back down as Liverpool jammed the equalizer. Even then we held Liverpool till the 45th minute when Liverpool were given a soft penalty, which Steven Gerrard scored. We felt cheated at half time. The second half flew by, we still created chances and played well. Virtually all the 6,000+ Oldham fans stayed behind to applaud the team at the end.
Where was the famous atmosphere? we asked. The Kop was so quiet all game. You hear all this about the magical Kop atmosphere. Even at 5-1 down we were bouncing, singing and proud of our team. Yet Liverpool fans....not a peep from them.
Many of people reading this will think, so what? But for all you who support football league clubs like Bury, Rochdale etc... Will know exactly what it means to go up against big premier league teams. For those that don't understand the feeling.. Best put down that sky remote and go down and support your local team.
The only sour note was one of our players, Tom Adeyemi being racially abused by a section of Liverpool fans leaving him in tears has left a bit of a sour note on it. This occurred when the score was 3-1, after that the team and tom were mentally and physically worn out and it showed with two late Liverpool goals making it 5-1, such a flattering score line for Liverpool and so unfair on us.
Oh when the blues.............

The lesser spotted Oldham fan
If the BBC did a wildlife documentary about Oldham fans, it would go something like this:
The decline of the Oldham fan is something that has been ongoing for the past 15 years. While the fellow neighbours have thrived. Some 10,000 have migrated to the plains of the rich, fertile land of the city of Manchester.
The clubs local watering hole was pulled down a few Years ago which hasn't helped attract or maintain the dwindling numbers.
Though the numbers of Oldham fans has suffered due to poaching, loss of quality habitat, and loss of its entertainment, there is still hope.

Season over
So the football season is over here in the lower leagues of English football, no play-offs so no extended season. No promotion, so no excitement about the new football season in August. No relegation, so no misery through the summer.
So what does that mean for me? Well being an Oldham Athletic fan, none of the above apply to me. With there being no international tournament this summer the time will surely drag. A few weeks left in the current season for premier league and foreign leagues but I'm not really interested as long as Barcelona beat Man Utd I'll be happy. My other team Fiorentina have nothing to play for.
Nearly 3 months of boredom to come. I don't get to experience the thrill of a big multi-million pound transfer these days at Oldham. Maybe the excitement of a loan signing is all that's left.
Saturday's of feeling bored and wishing I was a game will now begin. Amazing how football turns into such a big part of your life!
Thankfully I have something to help pass the painful few months ahead.... Moving house!
So days & nights of packing have already begun, just 3 weeks left till the big move. I can't wait to get in and get sorted, a fresh start.
My main worry is where do I put my signed Kelly Brook in the new house?

OAFC "That's it, we're off"
Seething Simon says there's no will to carry on at crumbling Boundary Park
LEAGUE football will not take place at Boundary Park next season as the full implications of the collapse of the plans for a new stadium are realised.
That is the stark prediction of "sickened" Latics chairman Simon Corney as he struggles to come to terms with the fact that 18-months of work towards a move to a £20 million new facility at Failsworth has hit the Charity Commission buffers.
Corney says there is "just not the will" to carry on with football at the dilapidated old ground beyond the end of their current season and that he is now exploring every option - including ground-sharing outside of Oldham.
"I am afraid the writing isw on the wall for us. What else is there for us in Oldham? A brand new stadium on the Boundary Park site is just not an option - nobody is coming along with £20 million with to build it.
"I have been in contact with a whole host of organisations - no avenue is off limits. What I refuse to do is put the club into administration.
"Of course fans will be angry at some of the decisions we have taken regarding the current ground, but we have taken all of these with the best of intentions. - a new permanent home with improved facilities - but it has not been enough to secure a long-term futurefor the club in Oldham.
"Do we really want to go through this whole process again and again in Oldham - £35,000 for plans here, £20,000 for environmental reports there and what for - all for nothing, just bills, bills and more bills."
The only remaining member of the Three Amigos who took charge of the club back in 2003 to still be at the club, Corney said they had pumped £14 million into Latics and were also now faced with the problem of owning the Lancaster Club land - they paid £3 million - with little hope of a return.
Corney, speaking exclusively to the Chronicle from London, said that he was so sickened that he would not be coming to tomorrow's game with Dagenham and Redbridge: "I feel personally shattered. I am not looking for sympathy but I just cannot face coming to the town. That is sad because the new-look team under Paul Dickov is doing fantastically well. I just feel that I have to stay away and reflect on how I deal with this from here on."

Football Love or Football Hate?
Why do I love football so much? Even after it shows no love or respect for me?
My team Oldham Athletic have fallen down the football ladder. If we were playing snakes n ladders, we would have landed on square 98 and sliding down the big snake all the way to square 18.
Between 1989 and 1994 we were in football heaven, in the Premier League for 3 seasons, 2 FA Cup semi finals and one League cup final. Gates of nearly 20,000. Entertaining and attacking football.
The year is 2011, so where are we now? Well... Stuck in the 3rd tier of English League football. A stadium that is falling down & now only has 3 stands. New stadiums plans change more times than David Beckham's hair style. Gates have dropped to around 4,000. Fans deserted us, jumping on band wagon of Man Utd or Man City, (only a stones throw away from our current ground). The product on the field has also dropped with lack of investment.
Last night I was one of the 3,767 fans for Oldham v Southampton. Wish I hadn't gone. We lost 6-0!!! Southampton were brilliant and deserve to be in a higher league but we did not play well. Maybe the worst Oldham game I have ever seen, and I've been going since 1989.
We need a change of luck or I can see my team disappearing in a few years from now!
But, I still can't wait for the next home game! I love my club and will always do no matter what, I'll be a season ticket holder all my life. It's in my blood and it will never go. Ever since my dad took me to my 1st Oldham game all them years ago, Oldham Athletic have been a big part of my life.... I hope always will be.
Support your local team people, they need you! Turn off your Sky Sports, leave that armchair, and go and support your team!
But stick on your hat, scarf and gloves if your going to watch Oldham because it's freezing!!!
